The Mayor’s Diary is a documentary novel based on the true story of Karl Gunderssen (1882–1974), mayor of Drammen during and after the Second World War. Through the account of his great-grandchild, the author draws on Gunderssen’s original diary notes from April 1940 to portray how the mayor navigated a critical period—caught between occupying forces, Norwegian Nazis, and civilian pressure. The author takes certain literary liberties to build dramatic scenes, but emphasizes that all the main characters and events are historical.
The book provides a vivid picture of the importance of local politics in wartime: the choices that had to be made, what was at stake, and how city leadership was tested when confronted with power and ideology. It functions both as a work of local history and as a reflection on the importance of courage and responsibility in society’s most demanding moments.
